Rats! The story.

I found a new devotional book a few weeks ago while shopping at the local Christian book store. Ok. So I DO judge a book by it's cover and this one caught my eye.

What I didn't know it that there would be a story about RATS in my coffee book. In my mind, coffee and rats shouldn't be in the same sentence! Ick! However, it's the story that has stuck with me. It is about a girl who says she has a rat in her brain. The group of ladies laughs at her. One lady identifies with her. Those of us who feel like our minds are whirling a million miles an hour can definately identify with her. It's our cerebral rat, the one that's running on the never ending treadmill of our minds. Oh, yes. You identify with him, too, don't you?! The author goes on to talk about why he runs, what feeds him, and why he seems so at home in her head. Why he keeps her up at night and steals precious moments of her family time. She names her rat "Templeton" after the one in Charlotte's Web because he's helpful sometimes but mostly a big fat nuisance. Her rat runs on the need to please and the need to perform. What does YOUR rat run on? Are you a slave to the perpetual to do list or the need to please? There is no quick fix to the crazy rat (or even a lazy hamster), but we can refocus our attention. Matthew 6:33 says "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well." Making God a priority and allowing HIM to organize our schedule and families is the first step. Grabbing a latte to keep us going day after day isn't the answer to the rat problem. God is.

The book The Coffee Mom's Devotional is by Celeste Palermo. It's full of short chapters for daily reading. I'm only a few chapters into it. It's made me laugh and ponder. It's made me think about rats and how to rid my head of the one that lives there. It's made me want more coffee, too! Mostly, it's challenged my thinking about my relationship with God and how I need MORE of Him each day.
